Getting started with Night Nappies

Getting Started with Night Nappies can really seem like the final frontier. It’s the last piece of the puzzle when looking to use cloth full time, and I’m not gonna lie – it can be quite daunting. Like what exactly is a night nappy anyway? Can I just use one of my regular nappies with some extra inserts? Why are they sooooo big??

So there are a variety of ways you can use cloth overnight, much of this will depend on things like how heavy a wetter you have, how old your baby is and if you plan on changing overnight.

The general aim of a night nappy is to have something that will last 10-12 hours or 5-6 if you change overnight. To put that in context a normal daytime nappy is designed to last 2-3 hours, so with a night nappy we are needing to increase the level of absorbency up to 3-4 times that of a normal nappy.

Dedicated Night Nappies

The easiest way to get started with night time cloth is to use a dedicated night nappy. These come with everything you need to get through 10-12 hours overnight with minimal tweaks to the nappy. Dedicated Night nappies are usually a super sized fitted nappy that come with heavy duty material and lots of layers. The Baby Beehinds Night, Rawr Soakmaster and SHP Sandman are three of the most popular night nappies and each is designed to suit a heavy wetter. If you are unsure whether you have a heavy wetter you can find some info in the article ‘help I think I have a heavy wetter’

In saying that there are some babies who power wet at night, if you have one of these you may need to play around with a few options first before finding the right one.

If you have a medium wetter and would like to use a night nappy then the Rawr Stuff n Snap, Itti Bitti Night, Baby Bear Honey Pot and Bubblebubs Bamboo Delight are all great options.
The Baby Bear and Bubblebubs fitted nappies are technically daytime nappies but with a little bit of boosting such as a prefold or night weight booster set and you are good to go.

A light wetter overnight can get away with something like the Grovia O.N.E, Pop In with night time booster, Bambooty Nights or a pocket nappy with additional inserts.

Night Time Cloth For Toddlers and children who are daytime toilet trained.

This can be a little tricky as most children who are daytime trained aren’t really too interested in wearing a bulky nappy overnight. Also many toddlers don’t necessarily need the absorbency of a weighty night nappy BUT still need more than training pants offer.

There are a few options: Super Undies are one and motherease bedwetter pants however both will set you back around the $40 price mark and possibly are suited to medium wetters overall.

The rawr toddler pull up is a great option that sits somewhere between a pull up and a nappy. The benefits of this is that you can customise the absorbency really well to suit your needs. I have Lily in these with a size 2 night weight prefold – this easily holds 2 toddler sized pees, possibly even 3.

Night Time Cloth on a budget

If you are on a tight budget then the first option I would consider is trying to find a dedicated night nappy second hand. There are usually loads available at a much cheaper price than retail. Just make sure you check the age and length of use, ask about the wash routine and ask for pictures of the leg elastics.

If second hand nappies aren’t your thing then keeping an eye out for sales can net you a new night nappy with up to 30% off the usually price.

Other options are to try boosting normal daytime fitteds with night weight boosters or additional prefolds on the outside. You can also use a terry flat or the Rawr night weight prefold and add absorbency on the inside and also the outside to get your through the night.

Night nappies can be a bit of extra work to set up, particularly if you a using a combination of nappy and boosters but once you are set up it becomes easy. The easiest way to get started is by knowing what sort of wetter you have on your hand overnight and going from there. This will give you an idea of the level of absorbency needed, meaning you can set yourself up for a dry night every night.
